Dear Fellow Residents of Luceti,

Wouldn't it be entertaining to put on some Games here in Luceti? Not that the Cultural Fair wasn't amusing, or any of the other activities going on here -- but true gladiatorial games. The pitting of one creature against another! Think of the thrill and drama and the release that goes along with that sort of entertainment! And here in Luceti we are ideally suited for a very exciting Games indeed.

Who would you sponsor or volunteer for this entertainment? Or would it all be...

[There is a pause here.]

Pokey-mans? I find human beings MUCH more interesting to watch, personally.

Gladiatorial games end in blood and ruin. It is par the course for such things. By all means, make yourself the matron of such ruination. It is ever in fashion for those in the higher classes.

For a moment, sitting upstairs at her (Katniss') desk, the journal open next to her textbooks, where she'd been doing math - for a moment, Prim forgets how to breathe. It's such a casual statement. And Effie had to have watched the Games - she'd been Twelve's escort. Prim knew that. And she knew Effie was Capitol.

But somehow, living in the same house, it hadn't occurred to her that Effie had watched the Games with enjoyment. She'd found them entertaining. She hadn't been watching people she'd known (sure, she met them, brought them to the Capitol, but - ), hadn't been watching people she'd loved. She had wanted to watch.

Effie was actually suggesting they put on Games again, for no reason other than that she wanted amusement. ]

No. You shouldn't - it wouldn't be. [ That's said quietly, but firmly.

Katniss. The Games. Effie would probably want her sister to play, if she actually tried to set this up.

Eeeh, pretty sure it's a tradition in a lot of countries. It's just the word "gladiatorial's" a bit of a buzzword.

Why should one person's opinion spoil everyone else's afternoon out?

[There's no heat to the single name spoken; just a sort of weariness. Normally, with any one else, he might actually ask if she was all right.

But it was Effie, and she'd cut him off enough times in the past that he figured that was, at best, an unwelcome question.]

[Effie had truly come to care for Katniss Everdeen in a way she'd never been capable of before. Maybe it had been some property of the girl herself to captivate, or perhaps it had been the intrigue of her sacrifice for Prim. Sisters didn't volunteer for sisters in Effie's experience. It had been unique and powerful.

And here was Prim, a member of the household that Effie was still, with all her powers and efforts, trying to overlook. She didn't want to acknowledge that sacrifice as anything more than a vehicle to greater drama. Seeing the sisters together had made that far more difficult than it had ever been.

And these games that she was proposing -- they were meant to be innocent things, not the bloodhungry sport of the Hunger Games. Not like that.]

Come come. I think everyone could do with some enjoyment.

[Drama on display helped people forget the pain in their lives. It is one lesson that Capitols absorbed without thinking too much about it.]

I AM, Madame, MORE than considerate! I am considering a bit of entertainment and a break from the normal day-to-day dullness of life in Luceti!

Mmm, to put this lamely, 90% of civilized societies I know of [so everyone except the damn ninjas] don't have their competitions to be the death in the way the word implies. That's all.
