Fourth Dispatch: It's Not What You Think. Voice.

Dear Fellow Residents of Luceti,

Wouldn't it be entertaining to put on some Games here in Luceti? Not that the Cultural Fair wasn't amusing, or any of the other activities going on here -- but true gladiatorial games. The pitting of one creature against another! Think of the thrill and drama and the release that goes along with that sort of entertainment! And here in Luceti we are ideally suited for a very exciting Games indeed.

Who would you sponsor or volunteer for this entertainment? Or would it all be...

[There is a pause here.]

Pokey-mans? I find human beings MUCH more interesting to watch, personally.

[Right...] Well, that's one way of looking at it for some, as there are people who compete with their Pokemon in some of the tournaments or even for the Pokemon League Challenge we have in Unova. The goal is to see whose teamwork is the strongest, of course, and these battles can certainly have a very exciting taste to them.

Though, there are also many that simply battle for fun, or lack a particularly competitive nature and choose not to battle with their Pokemon at all. Some even take part in other sports or contests with them instead of competing for the league or other tournaments.

Pokemon? Well, probably. I train with Soren everyday, but we've never really fought since that's not normally how it works? At least, that's not how people've said it works.

[ Oh, right, she should explain one point there... ] Soren's my partner; he's a Swellow Pokemon. He bends air like I do.

I think it'd depend on if the Pokemon wanted to do it, or if the trainers wanted to do it, too.

I'm pretty sure I do.

Ah, but that is where you are wrong, my dear woman. I would delight in seeing it... and 'twould seem I am not alone.

"You didn't say it, Effie, but that's what the words you're using infer...not to mention how many people know about the Games from your home already. It's easy to come to that conclusion. Very easy."

He pauses for a minute, hearing that edge of tears in her voice, and sighs.

"Listen. I know you're just trying to get something going that's familiar, that you can understand, but you gotta keep in mind where you are, and how people here think, act, live. What they're going to think when you say stuff. The values here are different, what's acceptable is different. And maybe...you need to start asking questions of people first, see what they believe in, like, would get into, before you start making offers, all right?"

"I don't think something that'll get the whole village going is bad...but you gotta think about what will actually please a majority of folks. Ask around, listen. That's part of your job back home anyway, isn't it? Find out what the crowd majority actually likes so you can really get them going and not piss them off? Same thing here, only you're dealing with a completely different set of expectations. You're going to have to learn what they are first, and adjust accordingly."

...Why in hell he's trying this hard to help her out, he doesn't know, and he half expects her to dismiss it all. But...there you go.

[ ... Wait, what.. it takes her a few times listening to this to even know what's going on, and even then it still needs to be processed by her brain. ]

But.. doesn't that mean people would be hurt..?

Well, it could be extreme jousting. Maybe out in the middle of a thunderstorm with rain hitting the ground like bullets. In the dark!

[She taps her chin, mulling it over further. Good atmosphere can make a world of difference.]

We have, as a village, been through this song and dance once before. It was not for the sake of entertainment, it was done for the sake of catharsis. Unarmed combat; and that had more than enough people pass under my hands for treatment afterward. Armed games in a survivalist manner such as those you propose? I'll not have children forced to fight anymore by a fellow villager than I would the Malnosso. Take your entertainment and go to hell.

Oh and that makes everything so much better. How could I ever have forgotten that part? Oh. Wait. I did not.

No, you wish to do so indirectly by using the hands of others as a proxy. A much neater way to go about doing so, I must say. I should applaud you for your prudent planning. It would be a terrible waste to have your...fine clothing ruined by common blood.

Gladiatorial games? I think a tournament might be fun for some people, but don't gladiator types of events usually involve people dying?

...because I'm completely fine with a tournament, but not something that gets anyone killed. Even temporarily.

Why was he trying so hard to help her? He always had, now that she thought about it. Hmph.

"Maybe they just don't KNOW they like it yet. That happens, sometimes."

She winces at the tone of 'rebellious teen' in that comeback. Because he's righter than right and she hates to admit that.

Do they know that you want people to start killing each other though?

[Because, if someone who didn't know anything about the hunger games saw this, he could assume so. But, if they're okay with the whole "lets murder each other" thing, Henry will not be amused.]

I've met a Pickachu. [She feels the need to put that fact out there.] It's small and yellow, a wonderful power color. What color is your Swellow? Something sky-ish, I suppose. Blue?

I'm not so familiar with teamwork as I am with battles that feature a conquering hero. [She has to admit this again; it's probably old news by now.] But maybe these other sports or contests that you've mentioned might be more to the liking of the people of Luceti....

Pokeyman ones. [She says this as quickly as she can, trying to make her voice brim over with that bright confidence that can sway so much opinion back home.

At least in the Capitol.]

Games in which Pokeymans and Benders battle in a non-blood-drawing, non-injury-inducing way. Somehow.

Oh, Linda? [ ...The only Pikachu Ikki herself knows, so she's just guessing. ] What's a power color?

But yeah, he's blue! And red, and white. Actually - here, hang on. [ Ikki's going to stop speaking and go to video. She's in the yard of the Avatar house, and angles her journal so that Effie gets a good view of Soren, perched on a tree above her. ]

This is Soren!

Everyone gets excited when the unskilled ones make progress. Survive. Many people want to see them win.

[She's not so sure of the reasoning behind this; shouldn't the BEST always win and be encouraged to win? But Effie has found herself hoping, hoping, that those from her District survive. She tries not to get attached. It's hard.]

I could help organize the promotional materials...

[She CAN promote, can Effie. Stir up a crowd. Or at least keep a grim, silent crowd in line with lots of Peacekeepers behind her and a hovercraft or two filled with soldiers lying in wait.]
