Eighth Dispatch: The Malnosso Have Answered My Plea, They Must Want to Hire Me
Is anyone here good at fixing things? [Because Richard Sharpe's precious pistol is still in pieces and she can't go to the Smithy because Sokka -- whom she has no idea is gone -- is Katniss's ex-boyfriend and there's awkwardness there. Also, she sounds absolutely cheerful and not like she's terrified for her life because of the aforementioned Sharpe.
Effie might be somewhat out of touch with many of her emotions and what's considered normal, but she knows Sharpe well enough to realize that he might very well shoot her on sight for what has happened.
That's why, when she goes out walking later, she has her new enormous dog towing her along. She got him for Christmas. The dog she wanted was this.
The dog she got is this:
.
His name is Jason. Effie has to carry a towel to contain the slobber. His hairs are definitely sticking to her amazing Rufus Praza midnight blue Star coat (structured with Swarovski-like crystals over the heart.) She has to pick hairs out of her very thick makeup. But he's worth it. She feels safe for once -- actually, legitimately safe to be out.

[She turns her attention to Jason, slowly reaching out to pet his head.]
Oh, hello...
[She waits for him to try to bite her hand off, since she’s assuming that he’s supposed to be a guard dog, like Effie had wanted...]
[Action]
I don't think he speaks person, yet. But he does enjoy salisbury steak. And pizza. And those little dumplings with the pork inside. And scrambled eggs. And bacon.
[Effie has basically been cooking nonstop for him since she got him.]
[Action]
[Karla frowns as she listens to all that food that the dog was being fed.]
He eats all of that? That doesn’t sound very healthy...
[Action]
[And if that's the case she's going to have to move to a bigger place.]
Have YOU any guard animals, Karla?
[She almost said "pets." Almost.]
[Action]
[Even if Karla knows little about animals, this is pretty much common sense right here.]
No...I don't need any guard animals.
[Her sword guards her well enough.]
[Action]
[Yes once again Effie thinks she can run Karla's life.]
[Action]
[But the question brings up some gruesome images in Karla's mind. If her sword arm were injured, she probably wouldn't even notice. Not until the battle ends. She'd be too focused in the battle to even feel the pain of the injury. She'd be less than human at that point, the thing that scares her most about fighting.]
I would...keep fighting. I wouldn't even think about the injury.
[But there is a part of her that wouldn't mind a pet companion like this...]
[Action]
[Strangely? Effie doesn't sound delighted about that as she would have once done. No, instead she sounds slightly disgusted. She turns her attention to Jason.]
You're probably better off. He leaves his giant hairs everywhere. My entire wardrobe is fluffy, now.
[Action]
...I hate it. When we fight, we become blind to our own human limits.
[That can be a great strength, but also a great weakness.]

[Action]
[Wait, what...?]
Remind me...how?
