Dear Fellow Residents of Luceti,

Wouldn't it be entertaining to put on some Games here in Luceti? Not that the Cultural Fair wasn't amusing, or any of the other activities going on here -- but true gladiatorial games. The pitting of one creature against another! Think of the thrill and drama and the release that goes along with that sort of entertainment! And here in Luceti we are ideally suited for a very exciting Games indeed.

Who would you sponsor or volunteer for this entertainment? Or would it all be...

[There is a pause here.]

Pokey-mans? I find human beings MUCH more interesting to watch, personally.

They still lose things when they revive. And they're things that are not easy to get back, or live without.

Lightning-? [Pfft.] Or ice, water, fire, you name it. There's actually over fifteen different "elements" they can have, so the abilities are often way beyond your imagination.

[There is silence after that question, mostly because Effie does not fully understand what he means. As is usual around Derek, she feels like she is missing something but cannot begin to grasp what that missing piece is. She respects the living! Look, she's trying to organize entertainments for them!]

Can ANYONE own a Pokeyman?

Nope. They're native to this one world, and only four of them have ever been born in Luceti. [A beat and] Plus, they're a big responsibility.

It hurt the one it came from, and many here are not well acquainted with the practice of bleeding for the entertainment of others. But perhaps they ought to be educated, yes? Why not make the entire village your personal theater of combat?

Why should such a place already mired in fighting and battle need such a thing?

By pitting villagers already forced into a war they want nothing to do with against one another for YOUR entertainment. This is not your world. There are no Games here, nor have we need of them or anything remotely like them. You wish to be entertained? Read a book.

...most folks here won't like the suggestion, Effie. The ones that do? Are the ones looking for an excuse to kill other people without getting in trouble for it.

Most of us here, any experiences we might have had with a world that thinks the Games or a variation thereof is acceptable, know the real reason they're held is to keep the 'riff raff' in their place, lower the population, and keep the rich warm and snug in their homes while the so called lesser folks struggle and suffer and die beneath them.

The only thing really marking the differences is who has the random bad luck to be born into the part of the population that is considered disposable and inconsequential. They're the ones that suffer, get torn apart, die alone, hungry, sick and scared just to keep the people too scared to take any chances with their own lives entertained. You might as well spear a puppy on a hook and use it as a pinata. It's about the same thing. The only one who gets anything 'enjoyable' out of it is the person doing the torturing, or condoning it.

What kind of safety procedures would you be utilizing?

...This isn't the same thing, is it? Where a group of people fight and die until only one remains?

[A bloody good fight and the heady adrenaline rush that accompanies it is something he enjoys nearly on par with carnal pleasures. But he has undergone his share of gauntlets and trials and is far from willing to battle for a gleeful, hungry audience. To do so is to make himself something cheap and disposable, little more than the evening’s entertainment.

[Don't worry Effie, there's at least one person in Luceti whose world has something similar to the Games you're proposing.]

Aaah, you're talking about competitive battles, right? Like in the coliseum! True fighters gathering from all over to test their strength against one another and when all's said and done, they congratulate each other on their skills.

Effie. Babe. You really have got to work on your people skills.

[Yeah, remember telling him about the games?

He's got a few words on that.]

No. No one would ever let you do anything like that!

[And he sounds pretty P'O'd about it too.]

Ha. But can hue-mans fly? Having some pony gladiators would be pretty awesome.

[She snickers. It does sound pretty thrilling, assuming it's not an actual death match.]

That all depends on how these games would be staged, though. Are we talking stuff like jousting or something more intense?

[She does love competition, but after that last draft... eek.]

I wouldn't call something so base and violent as that a 'game', nor would I think the activity appropriate for using a volunteer based system of electing who participated.

[Sabriel hasn't heard of anything so crude, not in the time she's from in any case and that's still a good few decades before a good portion of the village. It's hard to keep the disbelief out of her voice but she tries.]

Do such...'games' happen often in your world?

Because opinions' don't extend to whether or not human live should be used for games! All life is sacred. And these games are a... a... [He needs a really big word for what he's feeling.] abomination!

And what would you be offering as a prize?

[You owe the dubious pleasure of Loki's company to Rogue, who lets him know what the voice posts say regularly.

He's not interested in entertaining anyone but himself. But this discussion holds great potential for fun.]

Sharpe didn't bother to say a word on the damned books. There were enough other people doing that for him. Besides, he wasn't so certain he could echo their righteous indignation. After all, the idea itself wasn't abhorrent to him. The difference, he supposed, was that he understood it to be damn likely abhorrent to everyone else. And so -- as little as he cared for the woman who'd forced herself into this somewhat-kinda-not-really-maybe happy home, the soldier saw fit to rap his knuckles sharply against her bedroom door.

"Miss Trinket," broad Yorkshire vowels grumbled through the wood. "A word?"

[Well at least one person. Here isn't spectacularly in touch with the idea of Spartan combat. It's not a topic that comes up much in Georgian suburbia.]

I like games. [And she's also spied Miss Trinkett sneaking around their apartment when nobody thought she'd be around. That means she's probably one of Jack's friends!] How do you play?
