Fourth Dispatch: It's Not What You Think. Voice.

Dear Fellow Residents of Luceti,

Wouldn't it be entertaining to put on some Games here in Luceti? Not that the Cultural Fair wasn't amusing, or any of the other activities going on here -- but true gladiatorial games. The pitting of one creature against another! Think of the thrill and drama and the release that goes along with that sort of entertainment! And here in Luceti we are ideally suited for a very exciting Games indeed.

Who would you sponsor or volunteer for this entertainment? Or would it all be...

[There is a pause here.]

Pokey-mans? I find human beings MUCH more interesting to watch, personally.

"...What threats?"

He saw Luceti's population as oddly peaceful, but there were a few troublesome elements. And although he might not like Effie, he hardly wanted to see her hurt. Even still, his question was rough and clumsy -- hardly warm, or even touched by any obvious concern.

So he hadn't. Well, it wasn't her job to educate Richard Sharpe.

She didn't envy the person to whom that mountain-high task belonged.

"Nevermind. I shall make some dog-friendly arrangements in the meantime. Perhaps the community housing buildings would be a sensible alternative."

Maybe getting a pet will help with that.

[ Is that sarcasm or a truthful suggestion? Coming from Marita, one will never know. ]

[ Marita is going to suggest that perhaps she should start with something smaller, but already knows that this woman is set in her ways and that maybe it's just best she learns the process without interventions from a stranger. She lets it be. ]

If you're still willing to suggest organized wrestling, I'm a part of Luceti's welcoming committee and would be willing to look into suggesting it to others during the New Feather celebrations once it's established.

Pause.

"Be careful. Not everyone is going to at least attempt to be nice when they're disagreeing with you."

Because that is going to solve everything.

"...Who?"

He barked -- eager to know who was throwing around threats. Less eager to hear about this damned dog.

"Unless you know how to train it, it'll be useless to you. It'll either run wild and not do what you say, and possibly attack you, or it'll be best buddies with whoever it comes across, no matter how much you might hate the person. Especially if they know how to treat a dog. Not to mention attack dogs need special training above what any dog needs, and makes for a really rotten pet. Give them the wrong signal, and they'll rip your hand off."

Pause.

"Why are you so goddamned stubborn and blind, woman? Are you that determined to make an ass and outcast of yourself? Because you're headed that way pretty damned fast, and for a so-called ideal that would have you served up on coals as fast as anyone else if you fucked up."

"WHY IS EVERYONE....the dog is NOT going to eat my hand, alright?!"

What was WITH people today?!

"It will LOVE me, Derek Bliss!"

She had to get that point out of the way. Really.

"Maybe I should ask why you care." He always had. It mystified her. "Because I can look after myself, and I know what I'm doing. I know what people like, okay? I can do this."

[voice | locked]

[personal profile] rather_be_surfing 2013-06-26 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"Only if you know how to treat it right."

He's quiet for a long long minute. There's a moment he remembers, by the water, where, other than Sona, she had no masks at all.

"Because I think you're smarter than this, if you would let yourself be smarter. And because I think you aren't being smarter because you're scared. I don't blame you for that. It's understandable. But it's going to get you in a bad way with everyone except the people who are willing to use you for what they want. I don't like seeing people get hurt. And you're going to get hurt."

Oh. Well -- he wasn't too concerned about Zevran. Not that he doubted the man's convictions, but he could trust Zevran's actions not to be sloppy. Not to have collateral damage. But even still, the woman didn't deserve to be poisoned...did she?

"In that case," he hesitated, "if I were you, I'd be sure to prepare my own meals."

[The first response that comes to mind is that she can't be very good at the public relations aspect of her job, going by the response here. The second is that if she's just doing what she's used to - what normally works - it's more likely that her world operates on a different level or moral code.

And still his point stands. 8|]

Lady, I think this village's idea of PR differs from yours, and that's why your suggestion isn't going over so well. You might wanna fine-tune it.

If the animals want to, then that'd be fine. [He knows Appa wouldn't, because of his phobia of fire.] Stunts that have danger in them are one thing - if someone wants to do it, person or animal, that's okay. It doesn't involve violence.

That suggests that someone would be able to catch me at it. I am here to champion no cause. The games you suggest do not concern me. Katniss and Prim's contentment, however, does. Harm that? And I would take great care in monitoring that which you consume for the next few years.

[Sometimes. But people prefer not to talk about those gruesome moments.]

I think just about anything is possible! What sort of things do you usually put in these games? Do combatants get to bring their own weapons?
